Entry to Senior School and Prep School is by examination and interview.
The main examination for entry into Senior School in September is held during the previous January. Where places are available, pupils may enter the school during the course of the academic year. The necessary assessment arrangements will be made on application.
The examination consists of three papers – a Verbal Reasoning Test and papers in English and Mathematics. Testing at Prep level makes use of standardised tests but the school provides its own papers for entry at 11 and above. There will also be an interview with the Headmaster or Head of Prep School, usually on the same day.
Prep SchoolPupils will be tested for entry into Prep when they visit the School for a day.
Prep school tours are available with Mrs Peace at any time of the year. Appointments can be made by phoning the Headmaster’s Secretary and you can choose to attend as a family or just as parents. Tours usually last 20-30 minutes and provide an insight into the Prep School at work, the school building and facilities available. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions of relevance to your child starting their education with us.
Pupil Taster Days can be arranged for your child to spend the day with their current year group. During the day they will complete assessments in English and Maths as well as any regular classwork set by the teacher. It is an opportunity for your child to meet their future teachers and peers. At the end of the Taster Day, a verbal offer of place is given with written communication to follow.
EYFS and Key Stage 1 pupils do not sit any assessments. Instead, informal observations made throughout the day by both teachers and Head of Prep give a clear indication as to whether your child is ready for the level of schooling provided at Thetford Grammar Junior School. For those joining us below the age of 5, Taster Days are morning or afternoon sessions only.
Pupils can join Thetford Grammar Prep School at any point of the year. We also welcome any last minute registrations due to family relocations or unsuitability of a current school.
Pupil places, once offered, are guaranteed until the end of Year 6 although a continual review process will take place during your child’s time with us.

Entry into the Sixth Form is usually dependent on having gained five or more respectable GCSE passes, with evidence of interest and ability in the field chosen for Sixth Form study.
In the case of direct-entry to the Sixth Form, an offer will be made following an interview and the taking-up of school references. Scholarships are based on interviews, references and written papers. Prospective Sixth formers and their parents are invited to attend an Open Evening. Further details of the entry procedure are available in the printed prospectus.
